The Ginseng Market Report

I'm sure as all of you are well aware, the last couple of years in the Ginseng market has not been all that good. The primary problem with the market is the computers. The Chinese are a hair bit behind us but they  understand how to use computers, they are going down the list of the ginseng growers, dealers and seeing who will sell their ginseng for the least.  Then on the other side of it the harvesters are going down the same list and seeing who will pay the most for the ginseng.  Makes a very difficult situation on the dealers.  We didn't even get involved in it this season. All it does is create a whole lot of hurt feelings . You can't give the most  if you not going to make a profit.  We know the problem, what's our solution?

We here at Glacial Ginseng Co. have always been firm believers that there was a much better market here in the United States, than there was in China.  The seed business and the root business  has been good for Glacial Ginseng,  95% of our customers are American.  What needs to be done, we need entrepreneurship involved here, with the marketing of our own ginseng.   The American public  is totally unaware of the  benefits and the differences in ginseng.  They walk into a drugstore and buy ginseng, they don't get anything out of it they don't go buy it again.

Field cultivated, that market is dissipating entirely.  So many of the growers I know up in Wisconsin have been steadily getting out of it for the last 4-5 years.  A market that used to be sixty dollars a pound,  the same type of tactics by the Chinese has dwindled it down to eighteen dollars a pound.  When these commercial growers step out  of the game the only supply is going to be what's being grown out here in the woods.

We need more aggressive marketing.

People don't understand the difference in the potency between dried ginseng and green ginseng.  You really want to get energized eat some green ginseng.  Heat or alcohol  either one will release the ginsitis in the ginseng.  What needs to be done is that these roots need to be vacuum  packed, put on to cards and merchandised through health food stores and other retail outlets.  There's a world open here,  I enjoy the seed and rootlet business, it supplements my fishing.  But the marketing aspect of what could be here.  Source of supply, yes we have the source of supply, with 923 growers, we are the largest growers of woods grown ginseng in the world.  The growers need to get involved here, we will be happy to work with you.

Entrepreneurship is what's needed. You young people need to step in here.   My health isn't the best and I'm getting along in my years.   We are trying to  open up some doors for some of the newer people to step in.  We have the  sources  of roots, vacuum packing them green is one concept. If you want to make capsules which is an  even  better saleable item. Try freeze drying green ginseng, then grind and capsulate.  I manufactured on a trial basis, several thousand units here a few years back.  I still remember the basics of mathematics. The door here at Glacial Ginseng is open to these type of projects, really would like to see an endangered specie live past my own lifetime.

SOME GROWERS TIPS

We got some mild winter on our hands this year.  Strongly suggest that you get out there and treat your plants for slugs.  Those slugs, especially in a mild winter, liable to be active all winter long.  If the ground isn't  frozen under the snow, all it is putting a blanket over them and creating a better habitat for them.  They actually like the slug pellets better than they do the seeds.  The slug pellets have been designed that way.  They need to be in there, other wise our friendly little slugs have a tendency to turn toward the seeds.
