Q: Where does Mercury Come from?

A: Mercury is found in cinnabar ores. Low levels of mercury are also in the biosphere. It is also found in fossil fuels like gas, coal, and oil.

I usually spent my summers out in the gold fields of the western states Originally as a prospector looking for the mother lode, but as the years passed, I found it was much more interesting to be a mining guide, taking the weekend prospectors out. The real enjoyment is in the finding!
wpe5C.jpg (43885 bytes)
Where did the "Gold" come from?

These Gold deposits were caused by the original Sudbury Meteor,  1.8 billion years ago.
The total ore mined to date in Sudbury is approximately 1.7 billion tons with 40 billion lbs of nickel, 36 billion lbs of copper, 70 million ounces of platinum, palladium and gold.
That's 70,000 oz. a year, @$1300 per= $7.2 Billion per Year, plus 283 million ounces of silver recovered  in the last hundred years.

If you’ll study the mining reports in Ontario they are talking about deposits 2500 feet away from the main vein is still showing quarter of an ounce to the ton.
The main vein are reading on an average of 2 oz to the ton.

They found that field up there around 1910. To 1912. It was discovered when they put the railroads in there. They have been mining steady in Sudbury for 100 years  and they estimate that they have another hundred years at the same kind of production.

Kirtland Lake is a little bit bigger operation and posts the same kind of production for the last 100 years. They estimate that they have another hundred years at the same kind of production.

Wawa Ontario, lots of gold mines, new and old up there. Another big gold deposit  up there at Red Lake.
These  deposits were created during a mountain building combination and the Sudbury impact crater.
When gold is created in building mountains it gets leached out of the surrounding minerals and gets condensed in to little gold nuggets. When you deal with a meteor impact, the shock waves shatters the surrounding bedrock and the molten gold minerals come up through. Same basic idea in meteorite deposits. Difference is the time span.
This is flash fusion.
It leaves all kinds of gold in your black sand and you need a Microscope To See it and a Impact mill to mine it.

Four Major Glaciers have taken four layers off the top of the cake and deposited them in lower Michigan.
As the glacier movements started about 1.8 million years ago the original glacier followed these paths went over theses super Gold deposits.

If you look at the picture of the Michigan glacial current from Google Earth.
You’ll see the striations marks actually the canyons that the glaciers cut in their movements it gives you the directions that they were going .
Over there at Sudbury Ont. you’ll see the same thing on the north  end of Georges bay, Manitou Island, and you’ll continue on across and around the edge of Lake Huron

Like taking a layer off the top of the cake , how many feet did each movement take, Ten feet, a hundred feet, two hundred feet, bear in mind there were mountains up there at Hudson Bay  the size of the Himalayas, Appalachians were the size of the Rockies.

Where Is It?

The pay streak follows the Grand River Valley from Jackson to Lake Michigan. There is another pay streak that runs south of I 94 from Jackson to the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes.  All of the glacial deposits got laid out on that nice layer of blue clay, and it all got arranged neatly by specific weight, Like in a flood you would expect. This Gold is not in the rivers, they cut thru the blue clay,70 to 80' to bed rock. The gold is in the river banks, follow the big rocks. Some these old river valleys are 2or 3 miles wide and there could be gold all the way across.
I know where there are some really good Gold deposits!
How To Mine It.
The Gold is under the big rocks, trapped on a layer of blue clay, That Gold Can Not Fall Thru.

Dig out the blue clay, with a backhoe, put it in the bucket of a front end loader and then suck out Gold with a 3" dredge.
This type of dredge is known in Arizona as an “Arizona High Banker” It will empty a 3 yard bucket in about 30 minutes

A hydraulic mining dredge works on the principle of a large vacuum cleaner.  Water is pumped at high pressure through Two 1 1/2" hoses, One to a fire nozzle, breaking up and dissipating the silt and heavy blue clay. The other goes suction nozzle which pumps the material up top and into the sluice box, where the heavy minerals such as Gold, are trapped and the water runs back into the river.
Prospector Tip;
While riding the local back roads, watch the fence rows for big rocks. As they build these roads they cut into our pay streak and left the rocks. The bigger the rocks, the better the chances to find the gold.

Reported Gold Occurrences in Michigan

Following are excerpts from "Gold in Michigan" by R. C. Allen (1911) and The "Ginseng Growers Guide" by Michael Hunter (1998)

Upper Peninsula; Iron River in Ontonagon County. Area streams around Ishpeming, especially near old mines. Streams in and around the Huron Mountains in Marquette County.

Lower Peninsula; Allegan, Allegan County. Antrim Creek, Antrim County (nuggets). Boyne River, Charlevoix County. Little Traverse, Emmet County. Walton, Rapid River and Kalkaska, Kalkaska County. Near Lake, Leelanau County. Greenville and Howard City, Montcalm County. Little Sable River, Manistee County. Manistee River, Manistee and Wexford Counties. Muskegon River, Newaygo County. White River near Whitehall and Muskegon River, Muskegon County. White River, Oceana County. Birmingham, Oakland County. Mareellus, Cass County.

The renewed interest in prospecting combined with modern equipment and techniques, we believe will uncover gold in many previously untouched locations, and that well-known locations still hold significant amounts of recoverable gold.

In the lower peninsula of Michigan, the geology of the region has a tremendous bearing on the value of the ginseng, especially when you get into the Asian market. If you can show the Chinese just one little flake of gold out of your region, it makes their mouth water.

The soil that we are growing on went over one big gold deposit in Ontario. About one hundred miles north of Lake Superior, is the largest working gold mine in the North American hemisphere. If you come straight down from that, you pick up the gold deposits in the upper peninsula. If you follow that flow, you can figure where the glacier went. Follow a map right on down the west side of Michigan. It came on down and made a bend around Jackson, which is one of the reasons this is my home base.

Study your geology. Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin also have glacial deposits. Only Michigan and Indiana have significant amounts of gold mineralization, and then only in certain areas. There is no soil to equal southern Michigan's. Without a doubt Michigan will produce the finest ginseng in the world, just like it always did.

For years, the ginseng coming out of the Carolinas has been the highest prized ginseng in the world. That is gold bearing territory down there.

About Michael Hunter and Glacial Ginseng Co.
by, Mary Hunter
"Season of "98"
He has a vision in life, at a time of life when most men are planning to retire and play golf the rest of their days To see the endangered specie, ginseng re-introduced into the wild, back into the woods where it once grew naturally for hundreds of years His efforts to introduce genetically cross-bred seeds have been tireless.

Due to the great demand for it in the past, ginseng was gathered to the point of almost disappearing from the wild.  In the cultures of China, Japan, Korea and through out the regions of Asia, ginseng is prized for its reputed powers to cleanse the blood, extend life, and of course the very strong belief that it is a powerful aphrodisiac.  Growing up in a family that had been involved in ginseng gathering and growing for three generations, gave Michael a invaluable education.  He absorbed a wealth of knowledge of ginseng and harvesting.

Mr. Hunters mission is indeed two-fold.  While he works, tirelessly towards the goal of genetically cross-bred ginseng.  The result of which should bring about the growth of healthier, hardier, longer living plants.  He also pursues the goal of helping families get started growing ginseng and making a worthy profit for those families.

A cottage industry the benefits the whole family and our wilderness as well Indeed a worthy effort.  Mr. Hunter has spent all of his life in the wilderness.  As a child he spent every fall, in the woods, hunting, fishing, and of course hunting ginseng.

This time spent in the wilderness with his father gave young Michael a wealth of survival skills.  It also gave him a deep appreciation of the unique and valuable asset we have in our forests here in Michigan, and elsewhere.  It has instilled a lifelong respect for the wilderness and a deep conviction that it needs to be preserved and also encouraged to grow better.  Because of his Native American heritage, Michael believes in the powers of natural herbs and plants to heal a variety of ills, and that the mind and body work hand in hand in the healing process.

A factual biography of the life of Michael Hunter would rival any work of adventure/fiction on the best seller lists today,  Woodsman, prospector, guide, timber cruiser, webmaster, editor, seed and root dealer and grower, and recognized humanitarian Michael Hunter is a very multi-faceted man.  His close association with the USDA and Michigan State University is a long standing and very cordial working relationship.

Which, in the near future, may be the source of some very exciting news for the ginseng industry. These are the things to keep in mind when reading his book "The Ginseng Growers Guide", or when reading through the website at www.ginseng-seed.com   This is a man who has committed himself to a vision and has invested his time, expertise, and money, plus part of himself toward having it realized.

Michael realizes that he may not see the final results of his goals, But all of our children and grandchildren will.  That is his life long quest Michael Hunter, owner of Glacial Ginseng Company, he is far from being your average guy, but once you have met him you feel at ease with him and you just begin to realize the depth of him.

He is a humanitarian, a logger, a miner, a ginsengers, a trail blazer, an explorer, a pioneer, a fisherman, a nature balancer, a teacher, a student, an author, and a guide And a very bold one of each.  A  modern day "Indiana Jones" He has done all of the above and has written a book, Ginseng Grower’s Guide,  which is both informative and interesting.

When you read his book, keep in mind every paragraph is but one fraction of his knowledge.  As a Native American, he often relies on his Indian background as his guide He tells people, "White man walk many miles, see little; Indian walk little, see much" How true! His dream is of balancing man and nature.

His ideas are both moneymaking and environmentally correct  I have walked the woods with him and immediately, I am struck by how at home he is It is there in the woods where you can see his dream in his eyes, balancing nature with man.  Take what you need and leave the rest.

Balance always balance, I go to church; he goes to the woods.  He has helped me see how we are all living spirits, people, trees, plants, fish and definitely his dog "Buddy".  If we follow our spirits like we do our nose, we will see our dreams become reality.

Periodically, throughout this year Glacial Ginseng Company and Michael will put out newsletters so people who are interested can literally "watch" him as he balances his life with nature and ginseng.  You won’t be bored, either.  You can balance most things, new – old, as in old techniques and new technology.  Our guide, Michael, will take you through all the seasons; harvesting timber, fall and spring planting of ginseng, mining for gold and diamonds, harvesting ginseng seeds and roots, hunting, fishing and trapping.

As your ginseng matures beside your timber, you will achieve a balance between forestry and farming that will give you both financial and personal gratification.  Michael believes that when the student is ready, the teacher will appear, I believe that, also.  He believes in building a strong foundation in both his personal and business life.  He is a trailblazer, pioneer, explorer all rolled into one.

Evaluations
With A  Camera

A  service being offered by Glacial Ginseng Company is a visual site evaluation from pictures taken with a camera.   A question that I am being asked is "do I have a good site for growing ginseng?" one picture is worth a thousand words, and so what I am proposing to do is to have you go to your woods and starting in the southwest corner, walk towards the northeast corner, at about 2:00 in the afternoon.

Take pictures to your left and to your right as you walk.  The number of pictures is kind of up to you and depends on how big a piece of land you are working with, shoot up the rest of the film that is in your camera, a half a dozen good pictures on a ten acre woods should give me an idea of what your site is like.  Adjust the number of pictures by the size of your woods.   Have someone stand about 20 yards away and try to get the bottom of their feet just nicely in the picture.  Take some pictures of some of the places that you think ginseng might do well in and I will evaluate those.

After evaluation of your pictures and judging from the shade, etc. I will promptly mail you a report that will have my suggestions as to the light requirements and other improvements that you might do to your site, that would improve your chances for successfully growing ginseng, (of course, I will also tell you if your site is not suitable for ginseng growing).

"Goldenseal"
Hydrastis Canadensis
by, Michael Hunter
Goldenseal is a natural herb with many medicinal purposes, as is Ginseng, and has grown in usage dramatically in recent years. I believe  in natural herbs, which we can grow and use with no side effects.  Also, growing both Ginseng  along with Goldenseal is putting   something back into our virgin forests, rather than always  just taking something out. Balance, always balance.   Growing Goldenseal is very profitable also.  To our customers, Goldenseal can, and should be an alternate and a rotational crop blending perfectly with Ginseng because Goldenseal thrives where Ginseng has grown previously and both require the same growing conditions of shady, rich luminous virgin Forrest soil.  It is not recommended to replant ginseng for a second time in the same soil  or spot.  However, Goldenseal thrives where Ginseng has grown  before!!

Goldenseal Grower's Tip's

You can plant Goldenseal from seeds, which takes  3-4 years to develop or  you can plant it by vegetative propagated plants, which may flower the first year.  Goldenseal "root" is actually a horizontal rhizome about 1/2" to 3/4" thick. From one Goldenseal plant, you can vegetative propagate up to  10  new "roots" or buds.  An average Goldenseal plant will usually give you 4-5 new "roots" or buds.  See the picture on our web site where Michael cut up one Goldenseal "root" or bud.  We can, and should always look  to our future with Hope for a better and more harmonious way of life for others, as well as ourselves.  Lets begin by showing this new generation a good example of the Best Land Preservation and utilization.  It will also teach them how, by giving we all benefit and learn the true meaning of sharing and caring.  Then, we will also teach how our attitude and our choices are both intelligent , profitable and Will Balance Man and Nature.

Goldenseal usage has been traced back  to the American Indian, as is Ginseng, for  a general health  tonic and used for centuries by many, and research  is discovering it's worth in boosting the immune system, among other  many medicinal purposes.  Balance, always balance.  Man and Nature, Ginseng (oxidizes) and Goldenseal (cleanses).  You can balance  new and old, as in old techniques and new  technology.  The American Indians also used it as antiseptic, to treat snake bites and whooping cough, pneumonia and many more cleansing uses, such as an eye wash and to treat sores.  Recent research has found Goldenseal usage to aid in treatment where topical antiseptics are needed, as  it cleanses the blood of toxic matters.  Ginseng oxidizes your blood.  Because Goldenseal does cleanse your blood of toxins, it can  also mask urine tests for illegal drugs.   This fact alone, tells  of  how Goldenseal  is very beneficial to our health  and well being, it's like getting  an oil change for your engine or  body.

Goldenseal is now one of the top selling natural herbs on the market, second to Ginseng, for natural health remedies.   Goldenseal also, in some states has become an endangered species, as is Ginseng.  As a nature balancer, keep in mind how we all can  do our best to make just dreaming into  doing, giving back to nature instead of always just taking.  Your rewards?  Start counting, putting back something good, utilizing and balancing our forests so they remain a blessing, not a burden to the next generation and many more to come..

Giving Hope to another generation surely is a positive thing we all need to do. It is a negative person who will not change and strive to help and do what he must.  I believe when I'm positive, I  achieve and when I'm negative, I stand still.   Goldenseal and Ginseng are both a  natural herb, with high medicinal purposes.   Both are profitable, not only in money, but also in personal rewards.  Its about building a new and better generation of Giving Back to Nature.  Take what you need to Do your Dream, leave the rest for our future generations.
Balance, always balance.
