Dried ginseng roots, 5 years and older, were selling on this years market for $400 to $600.00per pound, depending on age, quality, etc. There are 19 ginseng growing states and literally millions of acres of hardwood forests, in private ownership that would produce outstanding crops of ginseng.

American ginseng (scientific name: American Panax Quinquefolium ) is native to the Northern one third of North America, it was here before the Mayflower landed. The fur traders, traded it from the Native Americans, it's natural habitat stretches from Southern Canada, east to the Atlantic, South to Northern Georgia, East to Missouri and very northern Texas, West to Minnesota and along the Pacific Northwest from Northern California to British Columbia.

I guess, because the largest buyers of our American Ginseng are in the Far East, folks in this country have gotten to think of Ginseng as some sort of exotic, delicate, hard to grow specialty. The fact of the matter is that folks here were harvesting and trading in this before the Revolutionary War was even started.
