Ginseng Seed Stratification and Adapting To Weather Changes

We don’t know where all this plant will grow,
We know it’s basically a colder weather, higher climate type plant, it likes mineralized soils, such as we find on the ancient glacial deposits here in southern Michigan, northern Wisconsin, on into Minnesota. Similar soils are into the Carolinas and mountainous regions of Kentucky and Tennessee. What the ginsenocide level of these plants will be, we don’t know these answers yet, we encourage feedback from all our growers, we need commercial growers out here that have the appropriate suitable sites. Making Your Own Stratifying Box is very easy and inexpensive.
To Handle 5 Pounds of "Glacial Gold" Ginseng Seeds You would need the Following Materials, 1 2x4x 8', 2 Piece of common window screen 18"x 24"and some nails. You will also need a bag of Play Sand, usually available at Awl-Mart for about $2.50 for 50 pound bag.
Make a box 18" x24" from the 2 x 4. Attach One piece of 18" x 24" to the bottom with nails or staples. Next Blend equal parts sand and seeds together and place in the box. Dig a Hole, preferable on the northeast corner of your woods, large enough for the box. You wand to have a layer of sand, about 2" thick under the box, to help with drainage. Attach the top screen and You want the top of the box to be about 1" below the ground level. But Sand around the sides of the box and then mound about 3 or 4" over the top. Cover with 3 or 4" of Leave Mulch and they will keep very nicely until planting Time be it This Fall or Next Fall.
Many Growers Plant Their seeds Green in the fall of the year, but by placing them in a Stratifying Pit you Will Greatly Reduce your Loses to Mice Moles, Etc; If We Have a Dry Period, go out and Water Your Seeds.

Ginseng Seeds Have a 18 Month Germination and Can Be Planted at Any Time During Germination. The Ginseng Seeds are Normally Kept in Stratification Pits for The First 12 Months and Then Planted in The Fall.
Many Growers Will Keep Their Ginseng Seeds in The Stratification Pits For 17.5 Months and Plant in The Spring. This Greatly Reduces Losses to Mice, Voles, Birds, Etc;

Careful site selection is essential for ginseng cultivation.
Ginseng requires a freely-draining soil, low humidity and up to 65% shade. A prolonged cold stratification period is essential for both shoot emergence and seed germination in the spring, although low temperature requirements may be met artificially by refrigeration of seed prior to sowing.
Keep your seed beds close in. Don’t encourage large roots, the market doesn’t want that. This has to be a constant balance between the commercial aspects of it so that we don’t harvest our wild totally out of existence. The whole purpose of publicizing the facts about the germination and stratification processes that we’re using here is to be encouraged to be used through the industry by the industry so that we can not only reestablish an endangered species into the natural habitat within my lifetime, we can go on to make it universally available for its medicinal purposes to the entire world.

If we’ll go back out and plant these seeds into the wild we will reestablish it in its natural environment, plus at the same time promoting an overall good business structure for a cottage industry. A product that’s been in demand since its discovery in this part of the world in 1740. Ginseng was One of the first cash crops exported out of the North American Hemisphere. It’s had an ongoing successful market and it will continue to have an ongoing successful market. We have to raise a crop that’s what the market is looking for, not only in appearance, but also in potency.

To increase not only the germination factor but to create back to the original plant. By placing these seeds in your refrigerator, you’ve created the same environment as a naturally mild winter in its original habitat. You’re germination yield should be extremely good. This a new way of handling these seeds to get some germination out of it. Maintaining constant temperature, controlled environment, just triggering its response about 6 weeks ahead of planting, 8 weeks ahead of planting, 10 weeks. We are packaging these seeds and have them available, whether they’re with us or whether they’re with you, they’re already developing. At whatever stage that you buy them from now until we put out the sold out sign.

Once we place these seeds into their plastic containers, we begin their pre-germination cycle, actually triggering these plants to germinate. Recommended about 4 weeks in pre-incubation period for fall planting, 8 to 10 weeks, 12 weeks for spring planting. Recommended period is approximately three months for spring planting. two months. we’ll make that one balance. But from now until the first of March these seeds should be in the bags. We’re plenty early yet so it wouldn’t make any difference. Can be stored for 2 to 3 months. the longer the better, the embryo will develop slower and thus discouraging too rapid a growth which many times can cause the plants to grow out as they call it in the trade. They literally do their entire life cycle and just wither and die. This is where they haven’t had the proper incubation period prior to the spring planting. All of our seeds are packaged blended with sand prior to shipment.

"SPRING PLANTING TIP'S"

Plant early, especially the further North you are. This gives the seeds a chance to become climatically adapted to the environment that they are being planted in. This also gives the seeds a chance to be absorbing the nutrients from the soil that they are going to be raised in. When purchasing your seeds, be especially wary of seeds with dried out hulls. The embryos may be alive, but your germination factor will be greatly reduced. Naturally all of our seeds are float tested and decontaminated before shipment. Quality must be number one. Our future markets are going to demand it.
Suggested commercial woods planting is about 40 Pounds to the Acre. You should be realizing about 10 pounds of seed back for each pound planted in 4 years and about 10 pounds of roots for each pound of seed planted in 7 years. If you take care of your plants you might do twice that.
