Site Preparation and Answers To your Questions.

Been real busy here at Glacial Ginseng Co., I have put up two new pages and made some major up grades to www.ginseng-seed.com/PlantingTime.htm . The two new pages are www.ginseng-seed.com/PlantingByHand.htm and www.ginseng-seed.com/PlantingCommer.htm
I'm also working on a page for Ginseng Maintenance and Ginseng Root Grading.  We are now starting to ship Ginseng seeds for this season's planting.  This season Ginseng seeds are just outstanding.

Immediate Shipment

Glacial Ginseng always ships our Ginseng Seeds blended with sand, then wrapped in cheesecloth and put into a plastic storage container.  These seeds can be safely stored in the container they are shipped in for up to two months, if kept in a cool place, like your basement.  All you have to do is check them periodically to see if the sand has begun to dry out.   If it has started to dry out, moisten slightly.

Questions and Answers

Larry Siebelink writes;

Hi
my name is Larry Siebelink, my e-mail address is Siebelink@aol.com.
one question I have is do deer eat the plants, do I have to take precautions
to prevent deer from destroying the plants? thank you . I'm sure there will
be more when I receive my book.    Larry

Michael Hunter writes; taken from page's of the "Ginseng Growers Guide"

"Spraying is necessary during April and May, about every ten days while the seedlings are coming up. After that you need to spray about every three weeks until the plants go dormant in late September. I blend coyote urine in with my spray. This really keeps the deer and other wildlife out of your beds. Deer do not like to eat ginseng, but their sharp hooves can do some serious damage to your plants."   Additional note:  Deer and other wildlife will eat your ginseng seeds, so continue to use coyote urine until after you harvest your seeds.

Kevin Harris writes;  Mr. Hunter,

The seeds that I had purchased from you had sprouted into healthy plants this
spring.  However, the last time that I visited them was early July.  I had gone
to see how they where doing recently and noticed that most of them were gone.
Some of them were turning yellow & a few of them were still fairly green.  I
thought it might have been the extremely hot & dry weather that did my plants
in.  I checked out some of the wild ginseng plants close to my beds and some of
them where turning yellow with seeds that had all ready fallen off or are ripe.

My question is this.  Could the extremely hot & dry weather cause my plants to
go dormant early?  Will I possibly have to wait till next year to find out if
they made it?

Thank you,
Kevin Harris

Michael Hunter Writes;
  Kevin, You answered your own question.   It would not really hurt the plants, if you
could water them during dry spells.
I am going to answer this in a little more detail in upcoming newsletters and a new page on the web site.

Sonya and Hal Pearson Write;
We have just moved to Kentucky and have wild ginseng growing in our
woods.  We would like to plant more ginseng with this - would we be
contaminating what is already growing by putting other seeds in with
these?  We know nothing about ginseng but are anxious to learn.  Please
advise.

Sonya,  This just the type of place to plant more ginseng.  The new plants
will cross breed with the wild plants and you will have some of the finest
seed crops in the world.

James L Gaertner Writes;

Aug. 10 1999

Dear Michael Hunter,
     Thank you so much for sending out my order.  I'm hoping to get your seeds planted near my 13 year old ginseng next week, for future cross breeding.
     I've really enjoyed reading your book, I had ordered over a year ago.  I'll have to start using the new one soon, just about wore it out.  I think that your idea about cross breeding these plants is excellent.
     I've sent along a couple of photo's of my acre and 1/2 of woods site.  Located on the North east section of our woods.  Have had average luck over the years, Southern Illinois weather here can be harsh on these plants.
     One of the photo's is a experiment of mine.  I've been working with above ground cedar box's, holding about 200 seedlings or more.  These are for Future Transplant of other sites.  So far they been doing very well in these boxes.
     I'm going to try some of your seeds in one of them.  I'll let you know how they and the others come up.  Will contact you again in the Future, again Thanks.

Sincerely,

James L Gaertner

Michael Hunter Writes;  Thank you for the kind words James, your pictures maybe seen at www.ginseng-seed.com/SeedGrower.htm and do keep us posted on how they are doing.

In closing, I would suggest that you order your seeds early, to insure availability. We can hold your seeds until you are ready to plant.   "Growers Tip":  If you are going to be growing on clay soil, be sure to treat for Slugs.

"Glacial Gold" Ginseng Seeds
If you successfully blend 6 or more strains of a plant together , you come up with a new variety of plant and you have the right to name it.  This is what we have done with Our Ginseng Seeds.  Therefore We have named our Variety of Ginseng Seeds "Glacial Gold" Ginseng Seeds.  "Glacial Gold" is our trade-mark, it'd the brand of our Company, and it's a serious way to get these plants back to their original State.  So little cross-breeding  is being done.  The wild plants out here are so scarce and few and far between they're breeding amongst themselves.  Any unisexual plant or animal that inter-breeds with itself, creates a genetic clone.   Each succeeding generation is shortening the life span of the ginseng plant.  Plants that should be living 65 or 70 years are lucky if they can get to live to be 10 years old.  Our goal is to cross breed the heartiest ginseng seed available and create a vibrant ginseng seed that is more tolerant of disease.
All Shipments of Our  "Glacial Gold"
Ginseng Seeds Have Been Stratified One Year and Contain At Least Six Different Strains Of American Ginseng Seeds (Panax Quinquefolium) Including Woods Grown and Wild Ginseng Seeds.

Evaluations
With A  Camera

A  service being offered by Glacial Ginseng Company is a visual site evaluation from pictures taken with a camera.   A question that I am being asked is "do I have a good site for growing ginseng?" one picture is worth a thousand words, and so what I am proposing to do is to have you go to your woods and starting in the southwest corner, walk towards the northeast corner, at about 2:00 in the afternoon.

Take pictures to your left and to your right as you walk.  The number of pictures is kind of up to you and depends on how big a piece of land you are working with, shoot up the rest of the film that is in your camera, a half a dozen good pictures on a ten acre woods should give me an idea of what your site is like.  Adjust the number of pictures by the size of your woods.   Have someone stand about 20 yards away and try to get the bottom of their feet just nicely in the picture.  Take some pictures of some of the places that you think ginseng might do well in and I will evaluate those.
wpe19.jpg (55095 bytes) wpe18.jpg (50157 bytes)
After evaluation of your pictures and judging from the shade, etc. I will promptly mail you a report that will have my suggestions as to the light requirements and other improvements that you might do to your site, that would improve your chances for successfully growing ginseng, (of course, I will also tell you if your site is not suitable for ginseng growing).

Ginseng berry extract shows promise for Diabetes, Obesity.

An extract from the ginseng berry shows real promise in treating diabetes and obesity, reports a research team from the University of Chicago's Tang Center for Herbal Medicine Research. In the June issue of the journal Diabetes, they show that the extract completely normalized blood glucose levels, improved sensitivity to insulin, lowered cholesterol levels, and decreased weight by reducing appetite and increasing activity levels in mice bred to develop diabetes.

Grow Your Own.
We continue to have emails asking about the ginseng berry pulp powder; our best information at this point is that the best to get the berries is to grow your own  Three Year Old "Glacial Gold" Rootlets Planted This Spring Will Produce Seeds and Pulp This Fall.  Course look at it this way, you have your own supply of the berry pulp (just separate it from the seeds and dry in your home dehydrator) and you have the money from selling your seeds or you can plant them and raise more "Glacial Gold" Ginseng.

Growers Tip;

by Michael Hunter
Owner of Glacial Ginseng Co.
1 Bushel of Ginseng Berries Weights Appo. 65 Pounds and Will Produce 8 Pounds of Ginseng Seed.  It Takes 8 Pounds Of Ginseng Berry Pulp To Produce 1 Pound Of Dried Ginseng Berry Powder and 10 Pounds of Dried Ginseng Berry Powder To Make 1 Pound Of Dried Ginseng Berry Extract.  Every 100 Ginseng Plants Should Produce 1 Pound Ginseng Seeds.
