Fall Planting Time
August 15th thru December 15th
Some Fall Planting Tips: Be very careful not to purchase seeds with dried out hulls, the embryos may be alive but it is the hull that the embryo feeds on as it develops. The further North you are, the earlier you should plant. Plant to the East and Northeast side of your woods. If you are working on clay soil, you should definitely treat for slugs. If you do not want to use pesticides, an old timer's trick, take pieces of aluminum or sheet metal, about 6" wide and 2' long and place them through your bedding area. The slugs will adhere to the bottom of these pieces of metal. Periodically go through your beds and scrape them off the bottom into a bucket. They make excellent fish bait.
Ginsenocide Levels: The Herbal Industry has been making great strides in the area of self regulation and product information. As I have many times mentioned, the difference in the ginsenocide levels of field cultivated roots versus woods grown roots is very important. Up until now, we have had nowhere to really send our roots or other ginseng products to have them tested. A company in California sent me a card and advised me that they provided this type of service. I have called them, talked with them personally, they know their business, they can analyze our roots, and virtually, any other herbal medicine products. You might want to take a look at their web site: www.phytoanalytics.com
To Our Ginseng Growers South of the Equator: As you know, ginseng has an 18 month germination period, and South of the Equator, our seasons are the opposite. This has made growing ginseng South of the Equator extremely difficult and is a reason why ginseng seeds are selling for $525(AU) per pound in Australia. This next spring, your fall, we will have seeds available that you will be able to plant in your Fall and have the crops come up the next spring. These are Sonic Bloom seeds and they are a trifle more expensive than our current Glacial Gold ginseng seeds. They will be available at $92(US) per pound in 50 pound lots. Orders will have to be placed by December 15th, 1999 to guarantee delivery for your fall planting. A 25% deposit will be required on all orders.
