By Planting Genetically Cross Bred "Glacial Gold" Ginseng Seeds in Wooded Areas and Amidst Wild Ginseng, We are Reestablishing an Endangered Species in its Natural Environment.

Ginseng is an Endangered Species.

What little that is left in the Wild is Growing in such Isolation, that the Ginseng Plants have become inbred.
Ginseng is a Unisexual Plant.

It can Reproduce With or Without Sex, when this happens With Out Sex You Get Genetic Clones.
This Depletes The Genetic Blue Print and Shortens the Life Span of the Ginseng Plant .

Unisexual Type Plants and Animals Do Not Adapt Well To Global Weather Changes.

Our goal is to cross breed the heartiest ginseng seed available and create a vibrant ginseng seed that is more tolerant of disease.

Wanted Commercial Growers For "Glacial Gold"
American Ginseng Seeds and Roots

Ginseng is a unisexual plant, and when trying to develop a top quality seed, the rules are a little different.  The problem is that the majority of the ginseng seeds on the market are somewhat inbred.  The growers have been replanting their own seeds for too many years.  The way to overcome this problem is to cross breed six or more different strains of seeds together. This will create a new Variety of Ginseng seeds.  Our goal is to cross breed the heartiest ginseng seed available and create a vibrant ginseng seed that is more tolerant of disease.
When you successfully blend 6 or more strains of a plant together , you come up with a new variety of plant and you have the right to name it.  This is what we have done with Our Ginseng Seeds.  Therefore We have named our Variety of Ginseng Seeds "Glacial Gold" American Ginseng Seeds.  "Glacial Gold" is our trade-mark, it'd the brand of our Company, and it's a serious way to get these plants back to their original State.  So little cross-breeding  is being done.  The wild plants are so scarce and few and far between they're breeding amongst themselves.  Any unisexual plant or animal that inter-breeds within itself, creates a genetic clone.   Each succeeding generation is shortening the life span of the ginseng plant.  Plants that should be living 65 or 70 years we are lucky if we can get them to live to be 10 years old.
  wpe8F.jpg (58065 bytes)
Unisexual Plants, Like Ginseng, Do Not Adapt Well To Global or Local Weather Changes, This is One of The Reasons That Ginseng Remains on The Endangered Species List.   Ginseng is Primarily a Cold Weather Plant and is Native to The Northeast Section of North America.
When Growing Ginseng in Warmer Climates it is Advisable to Have The Ginseng Seeds Becoming Climatically Adapted to There New Environment As Early as Possible.

Ginseng Seeds Have a 18 Month Germination and Can Be Planted at Any Time During Germination.  The Ginseng Seeds are Normally Kept in Stratification Pits for The First 12 Months and Then Planted in The Fall.
Many Growers Will Keep Their Ginseng Seeds in The Stratification Pits For 17.5 Months and Plant in The Spring.  This Greatly Reduces Losses to Mice, Voles, Birds, Etc;

The Serious Ginseng Growers, You Would Do Well to Purchase Your "Glacial Gold" American Ginseng Seeds Early.
Build Your Own Stratification Pit and Place It Out In The Woods That You Will Be Growing Your Ginseng In.
This Will Allow The Maxim Time For The Ginseng Seeds to Become Adapted to Their Environment.

Glacial Ginseng always ships our Ginseng Seeds  wrapped in cheesecloth and put into a plastic storage container.  These "Glacial Gold" American Ginseng seeds can be safely stored in the container they are shipped in for up to three months, if kept in a cool place, like your basement or the vegetable bin of your refrigerator.  All you have to do is check them periodically to make sure the seeds have not begun to dry out, moisten slightly if needed.

Age 4 and Already On The Tractor
"Season Of 47"

Our "Glacial Gold" American Ginseng seeds are washed, float tested and decontaminated prior to packaging. The individual portions of seeds are wrapped in cheese cloth while still moist, placed inside an appropriate sized plastic baggie and sealed. This during normal shipment starts your germination right there. These seeds have always been in a closely controlled environment, never really subject to frequent temperature variations. This is a part of our continued stratification process that we have developed here at Glacial Ginseng through our research. When these packets are sealed moist, it traps the moisture within the plastic bag.

When you receive your shipments at your home, place it in your refrigerator, in the vegetable bin.   You’re giving cool steady environments, you’re not exposed to radical changes. You can watch these seeds germinate your own self, from the time you get them, you will see them develop. All you really have to do is to turn the package over once in a while.  The constant temperature will let the embryo develop slowly. They start germination during shipment inside of those bags. Leave them sealed. When you get ready to plant, your optimum time to plant is between the first of March and the 15th of April. Seeds planted in this time period should yield maximum yields. They should really start to be just indexing.

As spring progresses and the thawing cycles begin, it triggers the germination within the ginseng seed. Spring planting will many times yield better results than fall planting. Your planting window is much briefer and Mother Nature is very much in Charge!

"PLANTING TIP'S"

Plant early, especially the further North you are.  This gives the seeds a chance to become climatically adapted to the environment that they are being planted in.  This also gives the seeds a chance to be absorbing the nutrients from the soil that they are going to be raised in.  When purchasing your seeds, be especially wary of seeds with dried out hulls.  The embryos may be alive, but your germination factor will be greatly reduced.   Naturally all of our seeds are float tested and decontaminated before shipment.  Quality must be number one.  Our future markets are going to demand it.
Suggested commercial woods planting is about 40 Pounds to the Acre.  You should be realizing about 10 pounds of seed back for each pound planted in 4 years and about 10 pounds of roots for each pound of seed planted in 7 years.  If you take care of your plants you might do twice that.
We guarantee no dried out hulls.  The hull is what the embryo feeds on as it develops

These Stratified "Glacial Gold" American Ginseng Seeds Are The Very Best of The Best.

Been thinking about what Dad told me years ago
about hunting wild ginseng and sweet spots. You walk in on one of them, you can just feel it there, but the deer trails have a tendency to go from one of these sweet spots to another if you follow them along. Of course, hunting for wild ginseng along deer trails is an old timers trick, but when the deer get to these sweets spots, they’re looking for the ginseng berries to eat them. Well, they eat the berries, but the seeds pass right through the deer, consequently the Deer are doing some real nice work for us.

"Our Family"  Has Been in the Ginseng Business for 190 Years.
Ginseng has been in our family for many generations. It began with my great-great-great Grandfather who, in 1812, married a Seneca Chieftain's daughter and became one of Michigan's pioneers in the Ginseng business.
He worked for the J. J. Astor Fur Co., out of Fort Detroit.
Harold G. Hunter, my father, was a Ginseng Dealer for over 50 years. All of the local gatherers used to bring their Ginseng to him, and he would market it for them. I am trying to follow his foot steps .

"Spring Planting" Time For Ginseng

Plant As Early As Possible.

Glacial Ginseng Company Order Form

Glacial Ginseng Company is pleased to announce that we will be selling Wild American Ginseng plants for the fall planting. These wild plants contain the genetic patterns which are necessary for the survival of the future of a rare, endangered, unisexual plant. Older wild plants can easily be identified by looking at the neck of the plant. For each year the plant acquires another nubbin. Real true Wild American Ginseng plants will never be the same ages. Woods cultivated Ginseng or Wild Simulated Ginseng will all be pretty well uniform in the length of the neck. In time, by using Glacial Gold Ginseng seeds, this will change.

Transplanting of Wild Ginseng plants takes a good deal of care and special handling. These plants are harvested in the wild. The plants come straight to Glacial Ginseng Company. We will in turn, be distributing them with our seed orders. Remember, at this time, it is crucial to use our Ginseng Gold Ginseng seeds as we use a variety of strains which strengthens the life span of the Ginseng plants. By taking these wild roots and planting them amongst Glacial Gold Ginseng seeds, you are putting back a serious missing link, eliminating the problem of inbreeding and expanding their life. If we leave our Wild American Ginseng as is, eventually, it will die out completely. We are saving, enriching, and improving this dying breed. By creating a vibrant, more Superior Ginseng Plant, we are building a bright, fresh, new atmosphere around our whole eco-system, while expressing harmony with the old and future generations. Not only are you doing that, you are providing a safe home and protecting these wild Ginseng plants.

In reference to the Ginseng business which is growing - I want to talk to you about a concept I've been working on, that might be a workable solution. The Federal Government is talking about moving 70,000 # of root  - as long as we don't exceed that, they are not going to put a moratorium on it. I think we can deal with that type of situation. Now what I am thinking about doing here is buying these roots green from our existing growers. For more information about the Federal Ginseng Law, see:

We are going to offer a 25% discount off our posted prices of Wild Ginseng Plants to our existing growers. We are recommending about 1 Wild Ginseng Plant per pound of Glacial Gold Ginseng seed that you have planted or will plant in the future. We are also going to be offering these rare and extremely valuable roots in conjunction with our seed kits. The prices will reflect a 25% discount to our existing growers. We need your help in saving and enhancing these extremely rare plants.

Other things of interest: We've had a terrible problem over here at Glacial Ginseng Company with a virus in our computer. It made it extremely difficult to answer mail, publish newsletters, update web pages, etc. We are getting that problem solved. We are also in the midst of a possible merger with a major pharmaceutical firm out of New York. We are in the process of setting up a secondary base of operation in the Catskill Mountain area where we planted 100 # of Glacial Gold seeds this past fall. Appalachian Ginseng is some of the finer Ginseng in the world.
