By Planting Genetically Cross Bred "Glacial Gold" Ginseng Seeds in Wooded Areas and Amidst Wild Ginseng, We are Reestablishing an Endangered Species in its Natural Environment.

Ginseng is an Endangered Species.

What little that is left in the Wild is Growing in such Isolation, that the Ginseng Plants have become inbred.
Ginseng is a Unisexual Plant.

It can Reproduce With or Without Sex, when this happens With Out Sex You Get Genetic Clones.
This Depletes The Genetic Blue Print and Shortens the Life Span of the Ginseng Plant .

Unisexual Type Plants and Animals Do Not Adapt Well To Global Weather Changes.

Our goal is to cross breed the heartiest ginseng seed available and create a vibrant ginseng seed that is more tolerant of disease.

Induced Germination and Growing Ginseng South of the Equator
by Michael Hunter

This is a summarization of an on going research project that Glacial Ginseng Co. has been doing over the past 6-7 yr's., Since the introduction of Michigan's Commercial Ginseng Act of 1994.  The first part is induced germination.   As the seeds start to develop, in this unisexual plant, bear in mind that they have a 18 month germination factor and the embryo starts to immerge in the fall.  This process is referred to as grinning.   Good seeds should be grinning at the fall of the year, which is the prime time for planting "Glacial Gold" ginseng.  This grinning is very desirable, it ties right in with your percentage of germination.  Seeds that are grinning when they are planted in the fall have a real good chance of making it in the spring.  Unfortunately, due to the inbreeding (replanting the same seeds year after year) that has been done to these seeds, all of the seeds don't go into the grinning phase.  I've always said for a number of years, If you get a 70% yield we're doing good.  "Well, this season we've been getting reports from growers, of 90 - 95% germination, this is just  outstanding results".

We are very pleased with the germination that Our "Glacial Gold" Ginseng Seeds are getting and in the reports of how healthy the plant's are.     I have decided to Publish what we have learned, thru observation and trial and error.  Well, when I first started shipping seeds into foreign countries, I had a shipment that came back from Australia.  I had sent the seeds their because their seasons are opposite of ours, our fall is their spring and trying to change the germination pattern of our seeds, so they could possibly grow down there.  A certain amount of seeds will come up in that first season. In short, if you planted fresh picked seeds, probably 10 % of those seeds would come up the following spring, the other 80 - 90% the following spring.  Now, if you could artificially induce germination, then you could throw the bulk of the seeds into sequence, to possible match the plant close enough so that it will come in in their spring South of the Equator.  Now, this is where it started from.  The seeds that I had gotten back  were all grinning and they were 6 months out of sequence.  I was kind of astounded by this and it intrigued me.  We got an order or two back from the United States too, and these seeds were grinning much, much more so then I would have normally expected.  I was quite pleased but, I couldn't understand why the seeds were grinning so much.  Then I happened to watch a show on the Discovery Channel where they were using the Space Shuttle and working on seed germination as part of their research program.  I got to thinking about it just a little bit more.  These seeds that I'm shipping to Foreign countries are going Priority Mail, United States too.  That puts the seeds in the air plane for sure.   Now, the cargo holds on these planes aren't really pressurized and aren't really in a controlled temperature.  These planes go up to 30,000 feet and come back down again - this has a tremendous bearing on causing these seeds to start that grinning process.   I sent some seeds to Australia and asked the grower down there to please send them right back to me and He did.  Now these seeds were checked very thoroughly by me to make sure none of them were grinning and they were probably a little lower end quality because none were grinning.  These seeds came back to me and 90 - 95 % were grinning.   The embryo had been induced because of the barometric changes, etc,.  I'm not gonna try to use a lot of 25 cent words to try to explain, these are things that experience has taught me, and I sometimes think that it makes a difference.  These seeds that I've been shipping in the United States, they all go Priority Mail.  I'm gonna keep right on shipping them priority Mail.  You get them in a very timely manner, they get exposed to barometric and climate changes and it induces the germination.   This is of special interest to numerous inquiries that we have had from Australia and New Zealand.  As you are aware, in that part of the world seeds are in a real short supply and I believe that your current market down there right now is at $525/lb. (AU)  That is about $360 (US)  We here at Glacial Ginseng have found some super seeds that if planted during your winter will be up this spring.  Fall planting would have been a better idea, but if you can get these seeds in the ground right away you will have a crop this spring.  Now these are what they call "sonic bloom" seeds and they are a trifle expensive - $92/lb (US), 10 pound minimum, including shipping, handling, and necessary customs work.  Glacial Ginseng is actively looking for a seed distributor for your part of the world and will even put up a web page for an industrious distributor.
E-mail me for details
E-Mail .  I
have been reluctant to promote moving seeds into these Foreign Countries because of the success rate.  People start buying seeds, and then they don't get good crops, well this can hurt the overall business.  I've had customers who've come to pick their seeds up, they've been satisfied, but I think I would prefer to send them air mail.  Getting Ginseng seeds into the proper cycle is the key to Growing Ginseng South of the Equator.  If we can raise our germination from 70% to 90 or 95% at the same time, by all means lets put them in the airplanes.  This may prove to be a major step to saving a truly endangered species.

Other things that we get into here is seed size, induced germination and how we grow these ginseng seeds.  What we're looking at here is that we want to produce a Top Quality Ginseng Root with a High ginsitis levels (12%-14%).   We want to do it in 5 - 7 years at max.  Now our primary customer at this time is our Asian Market.  The Asian Market really doesn't have much of a way to check the actual ginsitis level in the ginseng root.  They buy it by the appearance of the root and the size which are most relative factors .  They see a whole big bunch of large roots and they think "oh, oh, grown under artificial shade and on poor soil".   The soils is what creates the ginsitis level in the ginseng root but, they can't measure the ginsitis level, so they will look at appearance.

We don't want these seeds to get big, at the present time.   During the stratification period, these ginseng seeds continue to grow and they continue to develop.  This is a natural process and this is how it's suppose to be.   But, it also promotes big roots.  Now, if you'll take partially stratified seeds, seeds that have been picked last fall and held  in stratification, till the spring of this season.  Take those seeds out of the stratification prior to the summer growing season, and place them back into a nice cool environment where the temperature is relatively mild, you will seriously retard the size of those seeds.   The size of the seed is what determines the size of the root.  We need to grow a crop that the markets gonna want to buy.  Keep these seeds planted in close together, this also helps to promote smaller roots.  Plant them out there in the woods and you'll have the ginsitis levels.

The markets showing a different trend here to buying the woods grown ginseng, especially the Wild Simulated.  Now that's a two edge blade right there and there's a secondary side to it.  We can grow bigger roots out here in the woods and we can have the same good ginsitis levels in them.  It's just that with the market for those types of roots isn't quite here.  The grinders, those people who are going to actually make the ginseng capsules, this is what they need.  You'll grow a lot more pounds of roots per acre with high ginsitis levels.  This is where you get into the woods cultivated, which makes for better growing conditions.  You want to space your seeds further apart and you want to roto-til  the soil 6- 8 inches deep, making for easier harvesting and faster growing.

We're going to see the American Market  going to buying green  ginseng, they're already doing that.  There's a difference in the potency of the roots.  Green ginseng is much more stronger, much more  of a stimulant, but it needs to be processed within the first few weeks that it's harvested.  As the American Market becomes more aware of what ginseng's all about, they're interested in making capsules and Big roots with high ginsitis levels are what they need for this, We can do that.  This is a feasible, realistic thing.  Instead of taking the seeds and kind of putting them in cold storage, as I'm doing right now.  To develop the smaller seeds and smaller roots, you can leave them right out in the stratification pits and allow them to go through the temperature changes .  Radical temperature changes is what causes the germination cycle to begin.  But growing a crop for a market that isn't there yet isn't realistic.  Well common sense has to prevail here.  What we need to do is kind of enlighten our American Pharmaceutical Companies that we ARE concerned about things like ginsitis levels.  One Company has went right in there saying that they have ginseng in their capsules with a 14 % ginsitis level.  Well, I think I know the grower that grows for them and I know the company that buys it, and the 14 % is there. But, they're growing  it with the Sonic Bloom method.  Now, the Sonic Bloom method works, however they're using some chemicals which may actually alter the genetic pattern of the ginseng plant itself.  This makes for a very marketable product but, my primary objection here, is the idea that this is an endangered Species and it's also a nice cottage industry.  We want to re-establish the original species or as close to the original species as possible.

A  service being offered by Glacial Ginseng Company is a visual site evaluation from pictures taken with a camera.   A question that I am being asked is "do I have a good site for growing ginseng?" one picture is worth a thousand words, and so what I am proposing to do is to have you go to your woods and starting in the southwest corner, walk towards the northeast corner, at about 2:00 in the afternoon.

Take pictures to your left and to your right as you walk.  The number of pictures is kind of up to you and depends on how big a piece of land you are working with, shoot up the rest of the film that is in your camera, a half a dozen good pictures on a ten acre woods should give me an idea of what your site is like.  Adjust the number of pictures by the size of your woods.   Have someone stand about 20 yards away and try to get the bottom of their feet just nicely in the picture.  Take some pictures of some of the places that you think ginseng might do well in and I will evaluate those.

After evaluation of your pictures and judging from the shade, etc. I will promptly mail you a report that will have my suggestions as to the light requirements and other improvements that you might do to your site, that would improve your chances for successfully growing ginseng, (of course, I will also tell you if your site is not suitable for ginseng growing).

Wanted Commercial Growers For "Glacial Gold"
American Ginseng Seeds and Roots

Ginseng is a unisexual plant, and when trying to develop a top quality seed, the rules are a little different.  The problem is that the majority of the ginseng seeds on the market are somewhat inbred.  The growers have been replanting their own seeds for too many years.  The way to overcome this problem is to cross breed six or more different strains of seeds together. This will create a new Variety of Ginseng seeds.  Our goal is to cross breed the heartiest ginseng seed available and create a vibrant ginseng seed that is more tolerant of disease.
When you successfully blend 6 or more strains of a plant together , you come up with a new variety of plant and you have the right to name it.  This is what we have done with Our Ginseng Seeds.  Therefore We have named our Variety of Ginseng Seeds "Glacial Gold" American Ginseng Seeds.  "Glacial Gold" is our trade-mark, it'd the brand of our Company, and it's a serious way to get these plants back to their original State.  So little cross-breeding  is being done.  The wild plants are so scarce and few and far between they're breeding amongst themselves.  Any unisexual plant or animal that inter-breeds within itself, creates a genetic clone.   Each succeeding generation is shortening the life span of the ginseng plant.  Plants that should be living 65 or 70 years we are lucky if we can get them to live to be 10 years old.
  wpe8F.jpg (58065 bytes)
Unisexual Plants, Like Ginseng, Do Not Adapt Well To Global or Local Weather Changes, This is One of The Reasons That Ginseng Remains on The Endangered Species List.   Ginseng is Primarily a Cold Weather Plant and is Native to The Northeast Section of North America.
When Growing Ginseng in Warmer Climates it is Advisable to Have The Ginseng Seeds Becoming Climatically Adapted to There New Environment As Early as Possible.

Ginseng Seeds Have a 18 Month Germination and Can Be Planted at Any Time During Germination.  The Ginseng Seeds are Normally Kept in Stratification Pits for The First 12 Months and Then Planted in The Fall.
Many Growers Will Keep Their Ginseng Seeds in The Stratification Pits For 17.5 Months and Plant in The Spring.  This Greatly Reduces Losses to Mice, Voles, Birds, Etc;

The Serious Ginseng Growers, You Would Do Well to Purchase Your "Glacial Gold" American Ginseng Seeds Early.
Build Your Own Stratification Pit and Place It Out In The Woods That You Will Be Growing Your Ginseng In.
This Will Allow The Maxim Time For The Ginseng Seeds to Become Adapted to Their Environment.

Glacial Ginseng always ships our Ginseng Seeds  wrapped in cheesecloth and put into a plastic storage container.  These "Glacial Gold" American Ginseng seeds can be safely stored in the container they are shipped in for up to three months, if kept in a cool place, like your basement or the vegetable bin of your refrigerator.  All you have to do is check them periodically to make sure the seeds have not begun to dry out, moisten slightly if needed.

Our "Glacial Gold" American Ginseng seeds are washed, float tested and decontaminated prior to packaging. The individual portions of seeds are wrapped in cheese cloth while still moist, placed inside an appropriate sized plastic baggie and sealed. This during normal shipment starts your germination right there. These seeds have always been in a closely controlled environment, never really subject to frequent temperature variations. This is a part of our continued stratification process that we have developed here at Glacial Ginseng through our research. When these pac
