Ginseng How To Grow Under Artificial Shade And Growing Ginseng In Your Back Yard
by, Michael Hunter

Growing Ginseng in Your Back Yard

Use Your House For Shade!!

Face to the north in front of your house at about Two P.M. in the afternoon.  Look at the areas shaded on the East and North East side of the house.  Plant your Ginseng seeds in this shaded area.  Ginseng likes to rise to the morning sun but be in the shade by 2 P.M.  Fences and other sources of shade can be used in the same way.
The Two most important things to consider are the quality of your seeds and the light requirements necessary for growing Ginseng.
Quality of Seed: The most important thing here is seed germination. If your seeds are fresh from the stratifying pit and have been properly handled, your yield is going to be much higher. Ginseng has an 18 month gestation period.  The last 6 months are the most important.  In order for the seeds to properly develop, they must be exposed to freezing and thawing conditions such as occur naturally in the spring of the year.   If the seeds have been kept in storage and not exposed to the temperature changes, your yield is not going to be there.  The moisture content is very important. If the hulls on the seeds have been allowed to dry, you're just wasting your money.  I have noticed that my competition has lowered their prices, but they know what their product is worth.

You can Grow Some Nice Seeds Under Artificial Shade

Artificial Shade For Ambitious People

For People Who Don't Like To Mow Lawns

Shade Requirements:  Ginseng is a shade loving plant and requires 70% shade from about two p.m. on.  Ginseng likes cool afternoons and good drainage.  Ginseng needs the early morning sun, although I have had some good results with late afternoon sun on the northwest side.   The nice thing about artificial shade is that you can control your light.   Used pallets make a good source of building material and can be tied with twine, on cross members between your posts. Book mark the page, I will guide you through this step by step.
Cost for neoprene shade is far less than wood. Neoprene traps the heat and you will not get as good ginseng seed crop. If you used genetically cross bred "Glacial Gold" Ginseng seeds to start, you would get some top quality seeds in four years this way.
The only real sensible approach for the small grower who has one-half acre or more to work with, is to put in 5 lbs. of "Glacial Gold" Ginseng Seeds.  A real good rule of thumb for a ginseng grower to follow is;  What will work for potatoes will work for ginseng.

Your soil is one of your most important things. There are test kits that you can buy at your local farm supply stores to test your own soil.  Matching your pH, 5.5 to 6.0 is ideal for ginseng. The best situation for the small grower, growing under artificial shade, would be to put forest type soil four inches to six inches deep on top of your seed bed. You would then have the most ideal growing conditions. You could not only grow a top quality genetically cross bred "Glacial Gold" seed, you could grow a top quality "Glacial Gold" Roots.    Any cross bred ginseng seed on today's market is at a premium, if you could find it. There are only a few select ginseng growers of genetically cross bred "Glacial Gold" Ginseng Seeds and Roots.  We buy our Ginseng Seeds from growers just like you and we always buy from our own growers first.

Growing under artificial shade can get very expensive. You can get $25,000 (US) or $30,000 (US) tied up in an acre. You can control your light so much better than you can out in the woods. Your light, shade, and coolness are all primary factors to growing good ginseng. If you go with the neoprene cloths that are available, it's far cheaper then the cost of wood lath, but it will trap the heat and you won't as good of a seed crop. Think real serious about that. One of the ideas that I have been toying with is, using some of the military camouflage type netting that they use in the Army. Maybe some brush or plant stalks worked into it, to balance the light.  Some heavy duty Chicken wire, put up on posts and then weave some cattails or bulrushes into it, should work just fine.

Watch your plants, they'll start to lighten up in color if they are not getting enough sun, you will be able to see it. Those racks are tied into place with baling twine and can be moved to allow more light. You could make your own racks like that. You can see in the following drawings how these racks are made.
Local pallet manufacturers could make these for you. Actually, if you had access to some used pallets, you could probably knock them apart and make your own. There are commercial sources available in Wisconsin, they are on the Internet. Give the author a call, I'll turn you on to sources of this type of material.

Another concept to go along with this, think about leasing some land yourself. The cost of artificial shade can get very expensive. You need that wood lath for shade in order to produce a good quality hybrid seed crop. You need to regulate the light, but you can grow ginseng out in the woods. In my part of the world, here in southern Michigan, woods land rents for about $75 (US) an acre. Look at a 10 acre patch of a farmer's woods out there. Go out and treat him with respect and he might be happy to lease you some land. Give him a percentage of the crop. Start out with a seed bed and grow up from there, start to produce your own genetically cross bred "Glacial Gold" Ginseng Seeds.

When you run across the extremely rare ginseng root, which is called the "Emperors Root", that is shaped like a human body, where the head, arms, legs and the male sexual organ is pronounced. That is an emperor root, those single individual roots can bring as much as $10,000.00" (US)

"SPRING PLANTING TIP'S"

Plant early, especially the further North you are.  This gives the seeds a chance to become climatically adapted to the environment that they are being planted in.  This also gives the seeds a chance to be absorbing the nutrients from the soil that they are going to be raised in.  When purchasing your seeds, be especially wary of seeds with dried out hulls.  The embryos may be alive, but your germination factor will be greatly reduced.   Naturally all of our seeds are float tested and decontaminated before shipment.  Quality must be number one.  Our future markets are going to demand it.
Suggested commercial woods planting is about 40 Pounds to the Acre.  You should be realizing about 10 pounds of seed back for each pound planted in 4 years and about 10 pounds of roots for each pound of seed planted in 7 years.  If you take care of your plants you might do twice that.
We guarantee no dried out hulls.  The hull is what the embryo feeds on as it develops

"Glacial Gold" Ginseng Seeds and Roots

Ginseng is a unisexual plant, and when trying to develop a top quality seed, the rules are a little different.  The problem is that the majority of the ginseng seeds on the market are somewhat inbred.  The growers have been replanting their own seeds for too many years.  The way to overcome this problem is to cross breed six or more different strains of seeds together. This will create a new Variety of Ginseng seeds.  Our goal is to cross breed the heartiest ginseng seed available and create a vibrant ginseng seed that is more tolerant of disease.
When you successfully blend 6 or more strains of a plant together , you come up with a new variety of plant and you have the right to name it.  This is what we have done with Our Ginseng Seeds.  Therefore We have named our Variety of Ginseng Seeds "Glacial Gold" Ginseng Seeds.  "Glacial Gold" is our trade-mark, it'd the brand of our Company, and it's a serious way to get these plants back to their original State.  So little cross-breeding  is being done.  The wild plants are so scarce and few and far between they're breeding amongst themselves.  Any unisexual plant or animal that inter-breeds within itself, creates a genetic clone.   Each succeeding generation is shortening the life span of the ginseng plant.  Plants that should be living 65 or 70 years we are lucky if we can get them to live to be 10 years old.

Unisexual Plants, Like Ginseng, Do Not Adapt Well To Global or Local Weather Changes, This is One of The Reasons That Ginseng Remains on The Endangered Species List.   Ginseng is Primarily a Cold Weather Plant and is Native to The Northeast Section of North America.
When Growing Ginseng in Warmer Climates it is Advisable to Have The Ginseng Seeds Becoming Climatically Adapted to There New Environment As Early as Possible.

Ginseng Seeds Have a 18 Month Germination and Can Be Planted at Any Time During Germination.  The Ginseng Seeds are Normally Kept in Stratification Pits for The First 12 Months and Then Planted in The Fall.
Many Growers Will Keep Their Ginseng Seeds in The Stratification Pits For 17.5 Months and Plant in The Spring.  This Greatly Reduces Losses to Mice, Voles, Birds, Etc;

The Serious Ginseng Growers, You Would Do Well to Purchase Your "Glacial Gold" Ginseng Seeds Early.
Build Your Own Stratification Pit and Place It Out In The Woods That You Will Be Growing Your Ginseng In.
This Will Allow The Maxim Time For The Ginseng Seeds to Become Adapted to Their Environment.
