What Ginseng We Do Have is Being Grown in Captive Situations or Isolation as in the Wild. The Ginseng Plants Have Becoming Inbred.
Replanting The Same Seeds Year After Year is Not An Answer.  This Shortens the Life Span of the
Ginseng Plant and Depletes the Genetic Pattern in the Plant.
By Cross Breeding Ginseng Seeds and Planting Them in Forested Areas We Will Be
Genetically Reestablishing an Endangered Species Back To It's Natural Form
Your Planting Ginseng In It's Natural and New Environments is the First Step of a Trail That Needs To Be Followed.

Ginseng is an endangered species, and with every ginseng seed order that I send, I am doing something about it.   Join me in watching our Ginseng Plants grow, while we practice Good Forestry and Try to balance man and nature.
Michael Hunter

Keeping in mind, if and when you are considering trying " Glacial Gold" Ginseng  Co.  "New Concept" of blending 3 yr. old Roots with our "Glacial Gold" Ginseng Seeds  --- We and you, are, and will be balancing our forests in the process!!!

American Veneer Company
was formed with the idea of blending forestry and ginseng. One of the key elements is the proper light in the woods. Ginseng is a shade loving plant and over cutting your woods is just as poor a practice as under cutting. Ginseng seeds are expensive, the labor and materials necessary for successfully growing both have to come from someplace. The proper raising of veneer quality timbers will help offset some, if not all of these expenses. A veneer quality tree is almost always at least double the value of a lumber quality tree.

Over the years I have worked as a professional timber cruiser in conjunction with American Veneer Company.  Walked a lot of woods, had the opportunity to look at a lot of different stands of timber.  When you harvest mature timber out of the woods on a select cutting type basis, you're opening up holes into the canopy.   Nature many times opens up these type of holes in the woods.  Trees get blown over, struck by lightening, etc.

When you've cut a tree down, the root structure is still intact, and it will send up saplings.  Most of the time in these cut areas, the saplings come in way too thick, and this slows down the development process of the timber, but it creates Sweet Spots out there in the woods, open holes in the canopy that sunlight can get through.   These Sweet Spots make natural places to plant ginseng.  They also make excellent places to plant trees like walnut, cherry, white oak.

These young seedlings are 2 and 3 year old seedlings and are 2 or 2 and a half feet high.  When they're planted in the spring of the year they go up, straight up, trying to get to the top of the canopy of the existing forest.   This gives them a 2 to 3 year head start over the saplings that would normally come up out of the root structure, consequently shading back those trees.  Makes an excellent place to plant young saplings where you want real nice long, clean bodied logs, no cat faces on them, and nice uniform growth.

Over harvesting any woods at any stage of development is always a mistake in hardwoods. It’s not a mistake under different circumstances growing for different reasons. But if you’re going to grow veneer quality timber, good forestry practices are an absolute must.
This is an open area in the canopy that you create when you harvest more mature trees usually about 90 feet across.  You can regulate the area.  Many times the woods has already been cut over.  Figure out a rough circle 90 feet across in diameter.  Harvest the trees that are in that area to create a sweet spot.

Now here We recommend  the Stewardship Incentive Program.
Now this is a government program and I realize "government involvement - not too cool", but this is a terrific guideline. I have studied a lot of these reports and still do. This does not obligate you, but it gives you something to follow, and it makes real good sense.  Some areas there’s even up to $10,000 federal subsidy available. That’s up to an individual. Here in Michigan, we’ve contacted the Department of Soil Conservation and they are sending  me a copy of it. It varies from one state to another. It’s just like your ginseng laws. Every state seems to have a different set of rules. Somebody out there ought to gather them all up and find them someplace where we can put them on the web site where people could look them up.

Fell your trees north or south whenever feasibly possible. It’ll make the maximum amount of use of that direct sunlight. Where your exposure’s in there, one of those big trees comes down and opens up a nice little path down through there. It’ll break some saplings when it comes down, that’s a fact, but most instances these saplings are dwarf timber, they’re only maybe a couple, 4, 5, 6 inches in diameter, and yet they’re 45, 50 years old.

wpe15.jpg (47781 bytes)
This Is What We Want !!

Forestry and Light Requirements for Growing Quality Ginseng

A good forestry program is one of the key elements to successfully growing ginseng. You must balance the light in the woods to 70% shade, with 4 hours of oscillating direct sunlight.   Ginseng likes to rise to the morning sun, but be in shade by 1:00p.m.  It may even be necessary to build artificial shade in some areas to meet these lighting requirements.  Proper light management for growing ginseng blends extremely well with good forestry practices.
Order Form

Sometimes where a tree is placed, the value as shade can be more valuable than the commercial value as lumber.
In my book, The Ginseng Growers Guide, I talk about 4 hours of direct oscillating sunlight, morning being the best.   We always recommend planting ginseng on the east side of the woods, or on the northeast side of the woods, so the plants don’t get too much light.

These sweet spots can be created.  When you get over on that west side slope, if you're in there and you’re opening up areas about 90’ across, you can grow some awful nice ginseng and young trees. If you’re up there in the northwest part of your woods, you can open up even more areas. You can almost open up areas on that northwest side twice that much, 180’ across. Look at your more mature trees that should be harvested. There is a picture on this page of a couple old black oaks in the middle of real nice sugar maple saplings.
Order Form

Now there’s a case where those two trees should be harvested. That’s naturally sugar maple in there. They’ll take off and go for the sun. It’d be a super nice little place to plant some ginseng, maybe this next season I’ll get to it. But at any rate, growing veneer quality trees, good forestry, and ginseng always go hand in hand.

Been thinking about what Dad told me years ago
about hunting wild ginseng and sweet spots. You walk in on one of them, you can just feel it there, but the deer trails have a tendency to go from one of these sweet spots to another if you follow them along. Of course, hunting for wild ginseng along deer trails is an old timers trick, but when the deer get to these sweets spots, they’re looking for the ginseng berries to eat them. Well, they eat the berries, but the seeds pass right through the deer, consequently they’re doing some real nice work.

When working into a woods and you have merchantable timber, you can finance your ginseng venture from your woodlot. If you have a woods, I would put my "Glacial Gold" ginseng seeds in first. Get your seed bed started first, then you can recoup your financial investment from the harvest of your timber. That timber market is good and has been good in southern Michigan. We do a lot of work with VanKeulen and Winchester. I have been associated with those people for thirty years now. They own Buskirk Lumber Company and they have affiliated sawmills all through the hardwood, ginseng area.

You have local mills, check with you neighbors. Understand who you are doing business with. If you let some indiscriminate loggers into your woods, they can put you out of the ginseng business in the blink of an eye. Correctly harvesting your timber is important, both for good forestry and the shade factor to grow ginseng. Listed below are the basic requirements usually necessary to facilitate the moving of the equipment and manpower necessary to do a competent job in Southern Michigan. However, if planting ginseng is involved we have a lot more flexibility.

We buy   Black Walnut, Cherry, Hard Maple and Red Oak

Trees must be at least 54" in circumference at chest height and 10' from the ground to the bottom of the first defect, catface or limb.
Trees over 100" in circumference have started to over mature and the price per board foot starts to drop rapidly.
Due to the high cost of moving equipment  we must have a minimum of 35 trees, which can usually be met on a 20 acre woods and leave the woods with the right light for growing ginseng. We will not over Harvest any woods for any reason.

It is usually not necessary to harvest any trees to get your ginseng beds started.  Stay over on the northeast side of the woods and study your undergrowth.  If you get too far back in the woods where there is no undergrowth, ginseng or nothing else will grow there.  If you get too far to the edge of the woods where there is too much competitive vegetation, there is too much light for ginseng.

The Log on the Right will Veneer, The One on The Left Will Not.  Note; Centers of The Logs.

Ginseng Fact:   Ginseng takes so much out of the soil, that once harvested, ginseng will not grow there again.

Harvest trees in over-shaded areas, and other areas to meet both the shade requirements and good forestry practices

Don't Have a Forest for the Shade?

Lease some forest land.   The going rate around here is about $75 (US) per acre per year.  Five or ten acres is a good sized site.  We have approximately nine million acres of privately held forest land here in the state of Michigan, alone.  The only yield that the owners of this land are receiving is a timber crop about once in a lifetime.  Most of this land is not being managed properly.  A  potential grower could lease some of this forest land, and with proper management, have an outstanding crop of ginseng and timber.

If You’ve got an open field out here and you’d like to get in the ginseng business, plant your own forest in there. Plant young saplings in nice neat rows fairly closer together, you will create in a few years the canopy that you need for growing the ginseng. At the same time that you’re growing, if you’ll work with a species like hard maple, that grow nice straight trees in close husbandry as a tree starts to reach 4-5" diameter, they make excellent for the transplant for the lawn and garden world.
As the trees begin to mature and they get in the 10-12" bracket, if they’ve been put in nice neat rows, you can hook up a gravity flow tapping systems in there. It doesn’t do real good for veneer trees, but if you’re just wanting to grow a forest, why then you’re into looking at making your own sugar maple, and this type of thing is always enjoyable.  In a few years you will have an ideal place for growing Ginseng.

"Glacial Gold" Ginseng Seeds
If you successfully blend 6 or more strains of a plant together , you come up with a new variety of plant and you have the right to name it.  This is what we have done with Our Ginseng Seeds.  Therefore We have named our Variety of Ginseng Seeds "Glacial Gold" Ginseng Seeds.  "Glacial Gold" is our trade-mark, it'd the brand of our Company, and it's a serious way to get these plants back to their original State.  So little cross-breeding  is being done.  The wild plants out here are so scarce and few and far between they're breeding amongst themselves.  Any unisexual plant or animal that inter-breeds with itself, creates a genetic clone.   Each succeeding generation is shortening the life span of the ginseng plant.  Plants that should be living 65 or 70 years are lucky if they can get to live to be 10 years old.  Our goal is to cross breed the heartiest ginseng seed available and create a vibrant ginseng seed that is more tolerant of disease.
All Shipments of Our  "Glacial Gold"
Ginseng Seeds Have Been Stratified One Year and Contain At Least Six Different Strains Of American Ginseng Seeds (Panax Quinquefolium) Including Woods Grown and Wild Ginseng Seeds.

Evaluations
With A  Camera

A  service being offered by Glacial Ginseng Company is a visual site evaluation from pictures taken with a camera.   A question that I am being asked is "do I have a good site for growing ginseng?" one picture is worth a thousand words, and so what I am proposing to do is to have you go to your woods and starting in the southwest corner, walk towards the northeast corner, at about 2:00 in the afternoon.

Take pictures to your left and to your right as you walk.  The number of pictures is kind of up to you and depends on how big a piece of land you are working with, shoot up the rest of the film that is in your camera, a half a dozen good pictures on a ten acre woods should give me an idea of what your site is like.  Adjust the number of pictures by the size of your woods.   Have someone stand about 20 yards away and try to get the bottom of their feet just nicely in the picture.  Take some pictures of some of the places that you think ginseng might do well in and I will evaluate those.
wpe19.jpg (55095 bytes) wpe18.jpg (50157 bytes)
After evaluation of your pictures and judging from the shade, etc. I will promptly mail you a report that will have my suggestions as to the light requirements and other improvements that you might do to your site, that would improve your chances for successfully growing ginseng, (of course, I will also tell you if your site is not suitable for ginseng growing).

Ginseng berry extract shows promise for Diabetes, Obesity.

An extract from the ginseng berry shows real promise in treating diabetes and obesity, reports a research team from the University of Chicago's Tang Center for Herbal Medicine Research. In the June issue of the journal Diabetes, they show that the extract completely normalized blood glucose levels, improved sensitivity to insulin, lowered cholesterol levels, and decreased weight by reducing appetite and increasing activity levels in mice bred to develop diabetes.

Grow Your Own.
We continue to have emails asking about the ginseng berry pulp powder; our best information at this point is that the best to get the berries is to grow your own  Three Year Old "Glacial Gold" Rootlets Planted This Spring Will Produce Seeds and Pulp This Fall.  Course look at it this way, you have your own supply of the berry pulp (just separate it from the seeds and dry in your home dehydrator) and you have the money from selling your seeds or you can plant them and raise more "Glacial Gold" Ginseng.

Growers Tip;

by Michael Hunter
