Ginseng is an Endangered Species.
What little that is left in the Wild is Growing in such Isolation, that the Ginseng Plants have become inbred.
Ginseng is a Unisexual Plant.

It can Reproduce With or Without Sex, when this happens With Out Sex You Get Genetic Clones.
This Depletes The Genetic Blue Print and Shortens the Life Span of the Ginseng Plant

Unisexual Type Plants and Animals Do Not Adapt Well To Global Weather Changes.

"Emperors Root"

"Our Family"  Has Been in the Ginseng Business for 198 Years.
Ginseng has been in our family for many generations. It began with my great-great-great Grandfather who, in 1812, married a Seneca Chieftain's daughter and became one of Michigan's pioneers in the Ginseng business.
He worked for the J. J. Astor Fur Co., out of Fort Detroit.
Harold G. Hunter, my father, was a Ginseng Dealer for over 50 years. All of the local gatherers used to bring their Ginseng to him, and he would market it for them. I am trying to follow his foot steps.

"IMPORTANT PROPERTY TAX NOTE FOR OWNERS OF "FAMILY FARMS".

IF YOUR FAMILY FARM IS BEING THREATENED BY REZONING, THAT IS, IF IT IS IN DANGER OF BEING ZONED OUT OF AGRICULTURAL STATUS, YOU SHOULD CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL TOWNSHIP ZONING AUTHORITY. WE PERSONALLY KNOW OF CASES HERE IN MICHIGAN, WHERE A GROWER WAS ABLE TO KEEP THEIR AGRICULTURAL ZONING STATUS BECAUSE OF THE GINSENG CROP WHICH WAS GROWING ON THEIR PROPERTY.  GINSENG WILL GROW WELL IN ANY MAPLE AND OR MIXED HARDWOODS WOODLOT AND UNDER ARTIFICIAL SHADE IN FARM FIELDS.

We have growers who have done this, and it is certainly worth a few phone calls to find out your local zoning rules.

It has become a growing problem as developers bring pressure on local zoning boards to take attractive family farm acreage and wooded forests out of agricultural status and place them in the more expensive Residential Zoning, in many cases, when families can't pay these higher property taxes, the developers are able to come in and purchase these lands for a fraction of what they are worth.

If you own wooded acreage, and are faced with the high property taxes due to being zoned Residential, you may be able to convert that woods into agri-forestry and your land can be changed to agricultural status.

I can not speak for certain about other states, but here in Michigan, Ginseng is considered an agricultural crop.  There are some requirements at to the amount of land which must be planted.

The last customer we worked with, his particular area required that 50 percent of the land be planted.  This was up in North West Lower Mi., in the Grand Traverse Bay area.

If you have a township government system, as we do in Michigan, you would contact your township zoning board for their requirements to zone a property agricultural. If not, your county property tax office could give you that information.

Remember, Ginseng can also be grown under artificial shade, in fields and areas where trees are sparse.  There are many different types of shade structure you can do, depending on if there is existing shade or not.

You can contact your local assessor’s office, and your state senator and/ or representative for more information on their agricultural zoning rules for your area.   Also a good resource can be your state department of agriculture, especially in the ginseng growing states.

If you are able to do this, the taxes you would save would more than pay for your seeds, and you would have a profit on the cash crop when you market your roots and seeds.

We are also offering the opportunity for our customers to obtain Walnut, Cherry and Maple seedlings, and planting services for them.    These are investment timber trees, and will provide excellent shade for the growing of ginseng.

"Ginseng" How To Grow Under Artificial Shade
by Michael Hunter

Growing under artificial shade is expensive. You can get $25,000 (US) or $30,000 (US) tied up in an acre. You can control your light so much better than you can out in the woods. Your light, shade, and coolness are all primary factors to growing good ginseng. If you go with the neoprene cloths that are available, it's far cheaper then the cost of wood lath, but it will trap the heat and you won't as good of a seed crop. Think real serious about that.

Watch your plants, they'll start to lighten up in color if they are not getting enough sun, you will be able to see it. Those racks are tied into place with baling twine and can be moved to allow more light. You could make your own racks like that. You can see in the following drawings how these racks are made.

"Growing Ginseng in Your Back Yard"
"Use Your House For Shade"
Face to the north in front of your house at about Two P.M. in the afternoon.  Look at the areas shaded on the East and North East side of the house.  Plant your Ginseng seeds in this shaded area.  Ginseng likes to rise to the morning sun but be in the shade by 2 P.M.  Fences and other sources of shade can be used in the same way.

One of the ideas that I have been toying with is, using some of the military camouflage type netting that they use in the Army. Maybe some brush or plant stalks worked into it, to balance the light.  Some heavy duty Chicken wire, put up on posts and then weave some cattails or bulrushes into it, should work just fine.

By, Michael Hunter
You could say that I was literally born into the ginseng business My Mother enjoys telling the story of how Dad took her out hunting for ginseng three days before I was born Early fall is when the berries start to turn red Dad always enjoyed his bow hunting, the October season, here in Michigan, coincides very nicely with ginseng harvesting.

My Dad felt that it was important that I be able to live off the land, as well as be able to live in a conventional society He was a product of the depression era, and grew up in extremely hard times Ginseng was one of the things that did move in the depression, that and black walnut logs For the last Forty-two years, I have worked as a timber cruiser for American Veneer Company, this also gave me an excellent chance to pursue the hunt of the wild ginseng.

I worked a number of years in the Minnesota and Wisconsin regions and got very involved with the woods growers of ginseng They used to have me come in and balance the woods, so that we could get the light right in the forest. The passing of the 1994 ginseng law here in Michigan has opened up this territory As a timber cruiser, my work was seasonal.

As the sap came down in the trees and the logging operations started for the year, it was my job to market the trees, select the more mature trees, etc  So l have always been involved in the business Dad and I wanted to get into the idea of commercially growing ginseng We were getting there in '72, when they passed the endangered species act which included ginseng.

Dad wanted to grow ginseng for his retirement, I am trying to go on to make his dream a reality Timber season ends in early spring when the sap starts to rise I usually spent my summers out in the gold fields of the western states Originally as a prospector looking for the mother lode, but as the years passed, I found it was much more interesting to be a mining guide, taking the weekend prospectors out.

The real enjoyment is in the finding! The last two years have produced some very serious changes in my life  A old mining injury, to my right arm, has come back to haunt me  This along with the injury to my left hand, has led me to early semi retirement  I am going to continue on with the business, but only as a seed dealer on the internet.

I feel that I can do more to reestablishing ginseng into its Natural Environment with a web page, than any other way "Our Family"  Has Been in the  Ginseng Business for 197 Years Ginseng has been in our family for many generations It began with my great-great-great Grandfather who, in 1812, married a Seneca Chieftain's daughter and became one of Michigan's pioneers in the Ginseng business.

He worked for the J Astor Fur Co , out of Fort Detroit. Harold G Hunter, my father, was a Ginseng Dealer for over 50 years All of the local gatherers used to bring their Ginseng to him, and he would market it for them.

Been thinking about what Dad told me years ago
about hunting wild ginseng and sweet spots. You walk in on one of them, you can just feel it there, but the deer trails have a tendency to go from one of these sweet spots to another if you follow them along. Of course, hunting for wild ginseng along deer trails is an old timers trick, but when the deer get to these sweets spots, they’re looking for the ginseng berries to eat them. Well, they eat the berries, but the seeds pass right through the deer, consequently the Deer are doing some real nice work for us.

I am trying to follow his foot steps A book mark on our web site  might be a thought.

Unisexual Plants, Like Ginseng, Do Not Adapt Well To Global or Local Weather Changes, This is One of The Reasons That Ginseng Remains on The Endangered Species List.   Ginseng is Primarily a Cold Weather Plant and is Native to The Northeast Section of North America.
When Growing Ginseng in Warmer Climates it is Advisable to Have The Ginseng Seeds Becoming Climatically Adapted to There New Environment As Early as Possible.

Ginseng Seeds Have a 18 Month Germination and Can Be Planted at Any Time During Germination.  The Ginseng Seeds are Normally Kept in Stratification Pits for The First 12 Months and Then Planted in The Fall.
Many Growers Will Keep Their Ginseng Seeds in The Stratification Pits For 17.5 Months and Plant in The Spring.  This Greatly Reduces Losses to Mice, Voles, Birds, Etc;

The Serious Ginseng Growers, You Would Do Well to Purchase Your "Glacial Gold"™ American Ginseng Seeds Early.
Build Your Own Stratification Pit and Place It Out In The Woods That You Will Be Growing Your Ginseng In.
This Will Allow The Maxim Time For The Ginseng Seeds to Become Adapted to Their Environment.

Glacial Ginseng always ships our Ginseng Seeds  wrapped in cheesecloth and put into a plastic storage container.  These "Glacial Gold" American Ginseng seeds can be safely stored in the container they are shipped in for up to three months, if kept in a cool place, like your basement or the vegetable bin of your refrigerator.  All you have to do is check them periodically to make sure the seeds have not begun to dry out, moisten slightly if needed.

"Season Of 47"

Our "Glacial Gold" American Ginseng seeds are washed, float tested and decontaminated prior to packaging. The individual portions of seeds are wrapped in cheese cloth while still moist, placed inside an appropriate sized plastic baggie and sealed. This during normal shipment starts your germination right there. These seeds have always been in a closely controlled environment, never really subject to frequent temperature variations. This is a part of our continued stratification process that we have developed here at Glacial Ginseng through our research. When these packets are sealed moist, it traps the moisture within the plastic bag.

When you receive your shipments at your home, place it in your refrigerator, in the vegetable bin.   You’re giving cool steady environments, you’re not exposed to radical changes. You can watch these seeds germinate your own self, from the time you get them, you will see them develop. All you really have to do is to turn the package over once in a while.  The constant temperature will let the embryo develop slowly. They start germination during shipment inside of those bags. Leave them sealed. When you get ready to plant, your optimum time to plant is between the first of March and the 15th of April. Seeds planted in this time period should yield maximum yields. They should really start to be just indexing.

As spring progresses and the thawing cycles begin, it triggers the germination within the ginseng seed. Spring planting will many times yield better results than fall planting. Your planting window is much briefer and Mother Nature is very much in Charge!

The Ginseng Growers Guide by Michael Hunter $12.95
Growers Tip's
From Michael Hunter
Mice, voles (field mice), moles and slugs can be a problem, they like to eat ginseng seeds and roots.  During the winter, under the mulch and snow, all of the above are active.  The mice like to use mole tunnels to eat ginseng roots and seeds.  Slugs are active year round and given a good food supply (ginseng seeds), they
multiply.  Add a wet spring and they can multiply by the millions and eat a seed bed in a short period of time.

Prevention is the best approach, when I sow my ginseng seed, I come right behind broad casting slug pellets generously.    I like to use pellets with Mesuol in them, they seem to work the best.  This will give you initial control, I strongly suggest that you build some traps that can be easily maintained year round.  I use bricks, 6 bricks formed into a square, with 2 ends open and 2 bricks on top.  This keeps the bait dry and family pets out of it.  Commercial growers need at least 1 trap for each 2 1/2 pounds of seeds planted.  Mole tunnels, a with sharp stick, poke a hole in the top and insert some mouse bait (I use De-Con).

"Glacial Gold" Ginseng Seed and Root Kits From $49.95

Place a survey flag beside of the trap.  These metal survey flags draw static electricity during storms and this releases the nitrogen trapped in the decomposing forest floor. This helps jump start the seed germination and helps you locate the traps during the winter.  Growing ginseng is a year around job.  I mix slug pellets and mouse bait and fill the trap generously and often.  Experience has taught me that mice and slugs would rather eat the bait then my ginseng seeds.
"Deer and Turkey"
Deer and Turkeys, I like to use Coyote urine, placed on cotton balls.  Coyote urine is hard to find and draws coyotes.  Human urine works and a combination of the two is very effective.  So, if you want to scare the crap out of the deer and dump your turkey problems, do it up wind of your patch.

"Growers Tips" From The "Ginseng Growers Guide"

The "Ginseng Growers Guide" by, Michael Hunter,  Contains Many Helpful Tips, about Site Preparation and Planting Woods Grown Ginseng by Hand.

Undergrowth needs to be cleared to improve air circulation, to reduce competition and to allow room to till .  Weeds need to be eliminated. A herbicide should be sprayed on your site about four weeks prior to planting.  Round-Up works good here.  As part of your site preparation you should consider the balance of light in the woods.  If you are going to utilize the woods, you need a good forestry program.

About ninety percent of the woods that I have walked into, I could go over to the east side and I could find a place in there that with a minimal amount of work would be a good site for an initial seed bed. Those plants would then be up and growing for you, leaving time to balance your woods, work on soil and lighting requirements, etc.

Evaluations
With A  Camera

A  service being offered by Glacial Ginseng Company is a visual site evaluation from pictures taken with a camera.   A question that I am being asked is "do I have a good site for growing ginseng?" one picture is worth a thousand words, and so what I am proposing to do is to have you go to your woods and starting in the southwest corner, walk towards the northeast corner, at about 2:00 in the afternoon.

Take pictures to your left and to your right as you walk.  The number of pictures is kind of up to you and depends on how big a piece of land you are working with, shoot up the rest of the film that is in your camera, a half a dozen good pictures on a ten acre woods should give me an idea of what your site is like.  Adjust the number of pictures by the size of your woods.   Have someone stand about 20 yards away and try to get the bottom of their feet just nicely in the picture.  Take some pictures of some of the places that you think ginseng might do well in and I will evaluate those.

After evaluation of your pictures and judging from the shade, etc. I will promptly mail you a report that will have my suggestions as to the light requirements and other improvements that you might do to your site, that would improve your chances for successfully growing ginseng, (of course, I will also tell you if your site is not suitable for ginseng growing).
