The American Elm tree and Ginseng’s long association with elm and the woods was always the best indicator of where to grow good ginseng. You can tie this right to the idea of how the Elm trees died and I watched a species literally perish in my lifetime. It gives me a great deal of satisfaction to be able to help reestablish an endangered species in the same lifetime. ‘88, ‘89 saw the last of the American Elm disappear from the upper reaches of Minnesota, South Dakota, Northern Wisconsin. As the Elm died out of the woods, it let too much light into the woods, consequently the ginseng was dying right with it. Consequently we suffered an enormous loss of real true wild ginseng, just true, one of nature’s phenomena. We need to replace this. The Elm disease stays in the root structure, consequently the trees will grow, they’ll get 2, 3, 4 inches in diameter and they will die off, but this is a tremendous indicator of a good soil for growing ginseng. You see these died out, or it was an old Elm woods, it’s one of the very best of the soils to be planting your ginseng on.

Some of The Things Michael Has Done and Some of The Other Things He's Doing

By Mrs. Harold G. Hunter

Several years ago the concern on everyone's mind was Acid Rain.   The suggested causes of it were as widely varied as those of global warming today.   The effects of it were painfully obvious; crops blasted in the fields, poor harvests, stunted growth in whole areas, tree leaves turning brown and falling long before fall, trees slowly dying.

Everyone knew something had to be done about Acid Rain.  No one seemed to know what.  It was about this time that the elm beetle began attacking the weakened Elms in Michigan.  Our son, Michael Hunter, was a volunteer in the government's Elm Tree Control Resource Recovery Program.  He followed the spread of Dutch Elm Disease from Michigan to Wisconsin to Minnesota, and eventually South Dakota, harvesting the dying trees and hoping somehow the young ones coming up would be immune.

It was while in Minnesota that he became acquainted with a college professor who had been doing research on Acid Rain.  He had determined that the emissions from burning high-sulfur coal were causing the problem.  He had been experimenting to see what fuel mixed with the coal would lower the emissions.  He had found that 10% hardwood chips mixed with the coal did the job!  Because of the scarcity of Elms in that area, the news didn't create much of a stir.

Michael finally came back to Michigan only to find things much worse due to Acid Rain.  His dad, Harold Hunter and I were staying with my mother at the time.   Harold, an avid outdoorsman, was very upset about what Acid Rain was doing to the woods and the wildlife.  When Harold  went North in the fall, he would carry a sack of walnuts and acorns with him.  He would plant these where the trees were gone.  He would also replant ripe ginseng seeds when he found it growing.   In this way, he was planting for the future.  Michael discussed the experiments with us.  No one seemed to be aware of the experiments done by the Minnesota college professor.  We all felt they were extremely pertinent and that those in authority should at least know about them.

With Mother's help, I wrote a letter about the Minnesota professor's experiments and their results.  We  made several copies of the letter.  We sent one to a Senator Engler Mother knew in Lansing, one to the Governor's office in Lansing, Michigan, and one to the then President Reagan.  We never received a personal reply from any of them, however, a very quiet Executive Order (with Senator Engler's urging, we felt), went out to all state-owned buildings to combine 10% hardwood chips with the coal they were then burning.

Our largest utility, Consumers Power as it was called then, saw the environmental soundness of this policy, and began immediately to add 10% hardwood chips mixed with coal in their generating plants, with Senator Engler's blessing.   Consumers also discovered the combination burned hot enough to allow them to burn low-sulfur coal, which lowered the emissions further.

Michael's forestry background led him to create the Silva Culture Bio Mass Energy, he created short-term duration tree farming to provide a continuous supply of hardwood chips.

The specter of Acid Rain began to slowly fade away as other companies followed Consumers' lead.  Michael Hunter's abiding love of and interest in the woods and the preservation of endangered species made him the messenger who brought the saving news to Michigan.  Senator Engler's influence helped it become adopted as Official Policy.

In 1972 the Federal Endangered Species Act was passed.   Various other states passed laws exempting Ginseng, but Michigan didn't.  In 1994 Governor Engler Passed the Michigan Ginseng Act (Act 184, Public Acts of 1994) and now the law allows it to be commercially grown.

With Michael Hunter's help, Governor Engler will be remembered as the Senator who saved us from Acid Rain, and the Governor who helped people reestablish the endangered species of Ginseng.

Growers Tip's
From Michael Hunter

Mice, voles (field mice), moles and slugs can be a problem, they like to eat ginseng seeds and roots.  During the winter, under the mulch and snow, all of the above are active.  The mice like to use mole tunnels to eat ginseng roots and seeds.  Slugs are active year round and given a good food supply (ginseng seeds), they multiply.  Add a wet spring and they can multiply by the millions and eat a seed bed in a short period of time.

Prevention is the best approach, when I sow my ginseng seed, I come right behind broad casting slug pellets generously.    I like to use pellets with Mesuol in them, they seem to work the best.  This will give you initial control, I strongly suggest that you build some traps that can be easily maintained year round.  I use bricks, 6 bricks formed into a square, with 2 ends open and 2 bricks on top.  This keeps the bait dry and family pets out of it.  Commercial growers need at least 1 trap for each 2 1/2 pounds of seeds planted.  Mole tunnels, a with sharp stick, poke a hole in the top and insert some mouse bait (I use De-Con).

Place a survey flag beside of the trap.  These metal survey flags draw static electricity during storms and this releases the nitrogen trapped in the decomposing forest floor. This helps jump start the seed germination and helps you locate the traps during the winter.  Growing ginseng is a year around job.  I mix slug pellets and mouse bait and fill the trap generously and often.  Experience has taught me that mice and slugs would rather eat the bait then my ginseng seeds.

"Deer and Turkey"

Deer and Turkeys, I like to use Coyote urine, placed on cotton balls.  Coyote urine is hard to find and draws coyotes.  Human urine works and a combination of the two is very effective.  So, if you want to scare the crap out of the deer and dump your turkey problems, do it up wind of your patch.

The "Ginseng Growers Guide" by, Michael Hunter,  Contains Many Helpful Tips, about Site Preparation and Planting Woods Grown Ginseng by Hand.

"Growers Tips" From The "Ginseng Growers Guide"

Undergrowth needs to be cleared to improve air circulation, to reduce competition and to allow room to till .  Weeds need to be eliminated. A herbicide should be sprayed on your site about four weeks prior to planting.  Round-Up works good here.  As part of your site preparation you should consider the balance of light in the woods.  If you are going to utilize the woods, you need a good forestry program.

About ninety percent of the woods that I have walked into, I could go over to the east side and I could find a place in there that with a minimal amount of work would be a good site for an initial seed bed. Those plants would then be up and growing for you, leaving time to balance your woods, work on soil and lighting requirements, etc.

Wanted Commercial Growers For "Glacial Gold"
American Ginseng Seeds and Roots

Ginseng is a unisexual plant, and when trying to develop a top quality seed, the rules are a little different.  The problem is that the majority of the ginseng seeds on the market are somewhat inbred.  The growers have been replanting their own seeds for too many years.  The way to overcome this problem is to cross breed six or more different strains of seeds together. This will create a new Variety of Ginseng seeds.  Our goal is to cross breed the heartiest ginseng seed available and create a vibrant ginseng seed that is more tolerant of disease.
When you successfully blend 6 or more strains of a plant together , you come up with a new variety of plant and you have the right to name it.  This is what we have done with Our Ginseng Seeds.  Therefore We have named our Variety of Ginseng Seeds "Glacial Gold" American Ginseng Seeds.  "Glacial Gold" is our trade-mark, it'd the brand of our Company, and it's a serious way to get these plants back to their original State.  So little cross-breeding  is being done.  The wild plants are so scarce and few and far between they're breeding amongst themselves.  Any unisexual plant or animal that inter-breeds within itself, creates a genetic clone.   Each succeeding generation is shortening the life span of the ginseng plant.  Plants that should be living 65 or 70 years we are lucky if we can get them to live to be 10 years old.
  wpe8F.jpg (58065 bytes)
Unisexual Plants, Like Ginseng, Do Not Adapt Well To Global or Local Weather Changes, This is One of The Reasons That Ginseng Remains on The Endangered Species List.   Ginseng is Primarily a Cold Weather Plant and is Native to The Northeast Section of North America.
When Growing Ginseng in Warmer Climates it is Advisable to Have The Ginseng Seeds Becoming Climatically Adapted to There New Environment As Early as Possible.

Ginseng Seeds Have a 18 Month Germination and Can Be Planted at Any Time During Germination.  The Ginseng Seeds are Normally Kept in Stratification Pits for The First 12 Months and Then Planted in The Fall.
Many Growers Will Keep Their Ginseng Seeds in The Stratification Pits For 17.5 Months and Plant in The Spring.  This Greatly Reduces Losses to Mice, Voles, Birds, Etc;

The Serious Ginseng Growers, You Would Do Well to Purchase Your "Glacial Gold" American Ginseng Seeds Early.
Build Your Own Stratification Pit and Place It Out In The Woods That You Will Be Growing Your Ginseng In.
This Will Allow The Maxim Time For The Ginseng Seeds to Become Adapted to Their Environment.

Glacial Ginseng always ships our Ginseng Seeds  wrapped in cheesecloth and put into a plastic storage container.  These "Glacial Gold" American Ginseng seeds can be safely stored in the container they are shipped in for up to three months, if kept in a cool place, like your basement or the vegetable bin of your refrigerator.  All you have to do is check them periodically to make sure the seeds have not begun to dry out, moisten slightly if needed.

"Season Of 47"

Our "Glacial Gold" American Ginseng seeds are washed, float tested and decontaminated prior to packaging. The individual portions of seeds are wrapped in cheese cloth while still moist, placed inside an appropriate sized plastic baggie and sealed. This during normal shipment starts your germination right there. These seeds have always been in a closely controlled environment, never really subject to frequent temperature variations. This is a part of our continued stratification process that we have developed here at Glacial Ginseng through our research. When these packets are sealed moist, it traps the moisture within the plastic bag.

When you receive your shipments at your home, place it in your refrigerator, in the vegetable bin.   You’re giving cool steady environments, you’re not exposed to radical changes. You can watch these seeds germinate your own self, from the time you get them, you will see them develop. All you really have to do is to turn the package over once in a while.  The constant temperature will let the embryo develop slowly. They start germination during shipment inside of those bags. Leave them sealed. When you get ready to plant, your optimum time to plant is between the first of March and the 15th of April. Seeds planted in this time period should yield maximum yields. They should really start to be just indexing.

As spring progresses and the thawing cycles begin, it triggers the germination within the ginseng seed. Spring planting will many times yield better results than fall planting. Your planting window is much briefer and Mother Nature is very much in Charge!

"PLANTING TIP'S"

Plant early, especially the further North you are.  This gives the seeds a chance to become climatically adapted to the environment that they are being planted in.  This also gives the seeds a chance to be absorbing the nutrients from the soil that they are going to be raised in.  When purchasing your seeds, be especially wary of seeds with dried out hulls.  The embryos may be alive, but your germination factor will be greatly reduced.   Naturally all of our seeds are float tested and decontaminated before shipment.  Quality must be number one.  Our future markets are going to demand it.
Suggested commercial woods planting is about 40 Pounds to the Acre.  You should be realizing about 10 pounds of seed back for each pound planted in 4 years and about 10 pounds of roots for each pound of seed planted in 7 years.  If you take care of your plants you might do twice that.
We guarantee no dried out hulls.  The hull is what the embryo feeds on as it develops

These Stratified "Glacial Gold" American Ginseng Seeds Are The Very Best of The Best.

Been thinking about what Dad told me years ago
about hunting wild ginseng and sweet spots. You walk in on one of them, you can just feel it there, but the deer trails have a tendency to go from one of these sweet spots to another if you follow them along. Of course, hunting for wild ginseng along deer trails is an old timers trick, but when the deer get to these sweets spots, they’re looking for the ginseng berries to eat them. Well, they eat the berries, but the seeds pass right through the deer, consequently the Deer are doing some real nice work for us.

"Our Family"  Has Been in the Ginseng Business for 190 Years.
Ginseng has been in our family for many generations. It began with my great-great-great Grandfather who, in 1812, married a Seneca Chieftain's daughter and became one of Michigan's pioneers in the Ginseng business.
He worked for the J. J. Astor Fur Co., out of Fort Detroit.
Harold G. Hunter, my father, was a Ginseng Dealer for over 50 years. All of the local gatherers used to bring their Ginseng to him, and he would market it for them. I am trying to follow his foot steps .
